What is Clomiphene Citrate?
Clomiphene citrate (Clomid) is a fertility drug used in bodybuilding and in fertility medicine to induce ovulation. It works by encouraging the pituitary gland to release hormones responsible for stimulating the ovaries and causing them to produce eggs. It is one of the oldest and most popular medications for assisting with fertility and, in the bodybuilding world, for increasing testosterone levels.

Clomiphene Citrate in Bodybuilding
Clomiphene citrate is frequently used in bodybuilding to increase testosterone levels naturally. It blocks estrogen receptors, allowing more testosterone to be used by the body. Increased testosterone means increased strength and muscle mass. Clomiphene citrate is not an anabolic steroid, but rather an anti-estrogen that leads to increased testosterone production with fewer negative side effects than some other performance-enhancing drugs. Some bodybuilders also use clomiphene citrate as part of their post-cycle therapy (PCT) to restore natural testosterone production after a cycle of anabolic steroids.

Clomid Side Effects
While generally considered safe, clomid does come with a set of potential side effects. These can include hot flashes, headache, blurred vision, breast tenderness, abdominal discomfort, and more. Those who take higher doses of clomid can experience a rise in estrogen levels, which can lead to gynecomastia, excess body fat, water retention, and even testicular shrinkage.

Clomid Dosage
Dosing recommendations depend on the purpose of use, the individual, and other factors such as age, diet, and health. Most athletes and bodybuilders who use clomid start out with a dose between 50-100mg per day taken for a period of 4-6 weeks. Higher doses tend to increase the risk of side effects and are reserved for those with more serious medical conditions.
